The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an epistolary novel about Juliet Ashton, a writer living in London after the second World War. Juliet receives a letter from a man in Guernsey, a small island in the English Channel, who happened to find a book she once owned. The two begin a correspondence and Juliet learns that Guernsey was occupied by Germans during the war and how the formation of a literary society helped them to get through those difficult times.
Juliet begins corresponding with other islanders in the society and we get to know the people and their history well. The characters are wonderfully and warmly rendered. It is a novel with much heart.
A fast and enjoyable read; I can see why this book was so popular.
