Shoppers’ Splurge

I finally did it. After over 10 years of using my Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Card, I reached the maximum number of points! Add that to a spend-your-points event and that equals $200 of free stuff! Here’s what I got:

First a couple of skincare bits:

And now on to make-up, etc.:

  • Quo Brand Face Contour Brush. I have a couple of Quo brushes and I find them quite good.
  • Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in UnapologeticI have one of these in a much more neutral shade and love the long-wearing formula. This colour is super pink and perfect for spring.
  • Revlon Lip Butter in Wild Watermelon. I’ve talked before about my love of these lip butters. This is a beautiful watermelon shade that is super moisturizing.
  • Revlon nail polishes in Lily (purple) and Dreamer (blue). Some nice spring shades.
  • Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Midnight. I’m sort of getting back into eye liner and have heard great things about this one. Thought I’d switch it up a bit and go for navy instead of black. Looking forward to experimenting with this one.
  • Benefit They’re Real! MascaraA cult favourite and my first high-end mascara purchase. Will it live up to the hype?

Phew! That’s a lot of stuff. Can’t wait until this happens in another 10 years!

The Best Concealer (That I Have) Ever (Tried)

I was excited to run out of the previous concealer I was using as I knew exactly what I was going to replace it with. I’ve heard so much praise for the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I got the brightener/illuminator shade and it absolutely, 100% lives up to the hype. When I applied it under one eye and showed Kevin, even he was amazed at the difference, remarking that one eye looked bright and wide-awake, while the other one looked like I hadn’t slept very well.

The product is a pinkish shade that blends super smoothly into the skin. While it does crease a bit by the end of the day, I don’t know if there is a concealer that doesn’t. As this has a brightening effect, I wouldn’t use this on other areas of my face, but honestly, I feel like when I apply this under my eyes, my whole face looks better for it, spots and all.

Any product blowing your mind these days?

Lipsticks for Spring

The weather has been getting pretty nice in good ol’ southern Manitoba so I’ve been pulling out my springier lip colours.

  • Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie. These lip butters were all the rage a few years ago. They are a lovely lipstick/balm hybrid with a lot of colour payoff. This shade is a really nice everyday light berry that can be worn year round.
  • Revlon Lip Butter in Tutti Fruitti. Orange is so good for spring, but can be difficult to wear. This colour is slightly sheer, but still packs a good amount of colour punch.
  • Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me. A super sheer red lip that is perfect for just that bit of colour.
  • Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Lipstick in 110. The boldest of the bunch. A beautiful deep pink that will last all day long.

A New Plant and an Old Concealer

Just wrapped up a four-day weekend in which I slept a lot, ate a lot of chocolate, and finished up season 2 of Gilmore Girls.

I also finally visited Shelmerdine Garden Centre, which was magnificent, and bought this wee aloe vera plant to add to my collection. My Mom had these when I was growing up and I remember how useful they were for various skin ailments. Looking forward to re-potting it and watching it thrive.

I also finally (FINALLY) finished this Revlon Photo Ready stick concealer. It was recommended by Emily from Beauty Broadcast, which was the first beauty vlog I watched. She had it in her top products of 2011 and so I went out and purchased it and have been using it since. I probably should have thrown it out years ago. I don’t even know if you can still get this, but I would recommend it for light concealing.

Buy any plants or finish any make-up recently?

W3ll People Narcissist Foundation

Recently, I thought I’d try out this W3ll People Narcissist Foundation sample that I ordered through Clementine Fields. As this is a stick foundation, the good folks at CF chopped a bit off and put it in this little pot for me to try out.

I ordered the shade fair golden which is a good match for my skin tone, if a tad bit too dark. The consistency is quite thick so it doesn’t spread out very far and so you need a fair bit of product to get it all over your face. It has a matte finish, offers medium coverage, and lasts pretty well throughout the day. Well I was just sort of so-so about this as a foundation, its thick consistency, medium coverage, and ability to be built up, are great qualities for a concealer.

Not a bad product, but I would not purchase the full size.

Have you tried any W3ll People products? I hear their mascara is fabulous.

December Birchbox

photo

I was pretty excited when I heard Birchbox was coming to Canada and even more excited when Kevin gifted me a three month subscription. Here is what December’s box looked like.

Vasanti Cosmetics BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator. This is a facial exfoliator. I’ve used it a couple of times and don’t think it lives up to the claim of mimicking the effects of microdermabrasion, but it’s a scrub and does what it’s suppose to. I also like that it is paraben and sulfate free.

Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream. A cream with a cologne-y scent that is nice, but boy does it linger. Would not use this on any large body area for fear of projecting the scent into a ten foot radius for the whole day.

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner. A nice, basic, black eyeliner pencil. Goes on smooth and stays put throughout the day.

theBalm Staniac. This is meant to be a lip and cheek tint. While it looks fairly dark in the vial, it is extremely sheer. Like sheer to the point of invisible. On the lips, I had to apply layer after layer to get any colour. I also found that it was nearly impossible to get an even application and for a stain, it wore off really quickly. This product is slightly better on the cheeks, but still requires a lot of product to get any colour to show up. Pretty disappointing.

amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo. I haven’t tried this yet, but am excited to. I’ve wondered whether a dry shampoo will work on my curly hair and now I have the chance to try it out.

Overall, a pretty good first box. I’m excited to see what the next two months will bring.
